The limousine of the President was pulling out of Union Station. Itself a testimony to a standard of American luxury, shiny ,black, sleek and bulletproof.
I had to make a call on the smart sistahgirlfriend network, the SSGFN for those keeping account of such things.
"Did you see the rims on Obama's car?"
We exploded in laughter. He did it again.
Throughout this campaign I have understood some of Obama's moves as only those raised on the Southside of Chicago might.
He even walks like the Southside. I've spent a lot of time in Hawaii. He did not learn that walk in Hawaii.
I loved the way he signified on Hillary. "Who does she think she is, Annie Oakley?" You don't have to be black to appreciate his sense of humor. It's just that being black it was a sense of humor we could appreciate.
Ditto John McCain and the remark about the old boys network being a staff meeting for McCain.
When he brushed off his shoulders, he was communicating to those he knew might be worried about all the stuff that was being said by others. He was also teaching through example. More than a few young black men are paying attention. They are getting the message.
More people will see Cadillac Records. The first Presidential dance guarantees it. A movie produced and directed by an African American woman.
What was the message of the gold rims?
I looked at them, started laughing and said aloud, "Oh no he d'nt".
I gotta give big props to Obama on this one. With this move, he keeps his bonafides in the community.
I know what this will mean in the black urban neighborhoods across America. Those young boys sitting around will be talking about the President. They will begin to hunger for a long limousine with gold rims. Some will realize that besides rapping, basket and football in the last years we have added golf, hockey and the Presidency of the United States as a way to climb out of the ghetto.
I am thrilled for the generations to come. They have options.
I could not love this more.
